In FEVER We Trust
Every September of every year BASE is able to welcome students into the new term with the annual event FEVER. Fever is a time for students to unwind, have a good time and let loose before gearing up for the upcoming semester. The night is filled with students from all years wanting to kick it old school and dance the night away with some old school jams. This highly successful event is a key token in showcasing the fun element which BASE has to offer as well as our willingness to provide a situation wherein everyone can come together and enjoy themselves. Fever is ALWAYS a sold out event so when September rolls around, be sure to get your tickets early.
Love, Sex, Disease
Sexual awareness is of utmost importance in today's society and that is a fact well recognized by BASE. For aids awareness day we host a session called Love, Sex, Disease which aims to educate UW students about sexual encounters, the dangers associated with them as well as protection methods. This event is held with hopes that students can be informed and educated about a still somewhat taboo topic in a safe environment.
Black History Month Expo & Discussion
As part of our black history month celebration, we hold an annual expo. With this expo we display prominent black historical figures as well as the evolution of black entertainment, culture and intentions. The expo features various hands on elements such as hair braiding, or food tasting in order to immense the student body fully into Black/African culture. After the expo there is a discussion which takes place that is focused on a particular theme. A keynote speaker addresses the student body and open conversations also take place
One Seed Many Roots: Showcase
One of the ways BASE displays black excellence is through the One Seed Many Roots showcase which happens in March as a wrap up to black history month. The show features various local talents that display what It means to be rooted in excellence as well as exhibit the phenomenal diversity which exists within the African Diaspora. There are singers, dancers, poets, designers along with models that all make the night one to remember.
Other Events
BASE holds a variety of events throughout the year for members and any other interested participants. Take a look at our events in order to keep updated on when things are happening. You never want to miss a BASE Variety night!

Statement on the Racially-Driven Hate Crime

3a084397-c093-4e2f-b398-e323fa2a05e4The atrocity that occurred this week at the home of our students is a stark reminder that not only does racism still exist and is a problem in Canada, but also that issues of racism are present and affects us here far closer to home in the Kitchener/Waterloo area.

At UW-BASE, we are often reminded of the absence of space within which to have discourse on racial issues here at the University of Waterloo.

At UW, there are a number of services currently that allow for minority groups to get a safe space, but this incident is proof that a service for racialized individuals is not only a necessity…
